In the Name of God
This is the Project I am currently doing at A-Level Photography. I will be doing it for the next year or so.A bit about the project itself. In this project I will be focusing on the religious/spiritual side of the world. The topic has narrowed down the range of my photographs. There are a lot of topics within religion that I can focus on. A very popular and the most common thing associated with religion is the eveangelical church. Apart from churches there are a lot of other, religion defining factors:
- The Grave Yard
- Religious Artifacts
- Religious Symbols
- Temples
- Mosqes
Work of Other Photographers
The the set of images presented below are a part of my research task.
I have done it at the start of the course. The aim of this task was to
understand what kind of photos I will be taking in order to make this
project successful. I choose those images because they caught my eye,
I like the colours, the moods and the locatiomns of the pictures.
These images inspired me to take simmilar pictures while I am on my
own photographic journey.

I specifically chose this set of images becasue tunes in with the theme of the project. I like the way Adam used the technique of finding angles in order to make his pictures so effective. The exterior photographs in particular are striking becuase they don't involve any third party buildings, the only focus is the cathedral and the background, in this instance it is the sky. The image at the top presents the front of the Metropolitian Cathedral, he chose to shoot the picture from the left side of the building to give it a pyramid kind of look. The picture is well taken but also well edited, the use of change of colour and levels is wisible, this made this particular image very affective. The clouds in the background also set a mood to the whole picture, although it is hard for me to explain, they make the picture look and feel a certain way. The next set of pictures is also the exterior of the cathedral. Once again Adam has proved his creativity in terms of angle spotting. These angles are very unusual, that makes the pictures very unique and efective. These pictures are well shot and once again very well edited. The first picture on the left is black and white, with adjustments of levels. The other two images have been edited using levels and possibly hue/saturation. The final Image shows the interior of the Metropolitian Cathedral. It is a great shot because it is well centered and the overall symmetry of the image. I particularly like this image because it doesn't seem to have any photoshop adjustments, and if it has, they are minor. All Credit for the images goes to Paul Adams http://www.padams.co.uk |

Viviane is an american photographer aged 50. The photographs she takes revolve around reliogion and culture. Her photographs are in a form of documentation and seem to be telling stories of people in this world.
The fascinating thing I've noticed about her photography is that she is not a photographer who focuses on photoshop. The pictures are perfectly fine without any edits. All her pictures seem to be telling a story, they all have meaning, emotion and thought to them. Her effort towards documentation is great , she is she is helping me understand that there are million stories to tell about the world. She proves that culture is different all over the world.
In all pictures all people seem to have different emotions, perform different actions. Some pose for the camera directly , some are performing some sort of action. This is what I want to aim for in my photography, I do not want it to be plain, I want my photohgraphs to be deep and have a meaning to them . I think in order to create emotional photographs I will have to get people involved in them
MY OWN PHOTOGRAPHIC WORK
I photographed the Metropolitan Cathedral late in the evening. I set my exposure to 30 seconds and used a trip-pod. The clouds in the night sky were blowing. They have appeared therefore slightly blared in the photographs. I think that this adds a spiritual feeling to the images. The bare winter trees also add a lot of atmosphere to the images- almost haunting.
I had waited for a full moon. Again, I knew that this would add a lot of spiritual feeling to the images. The crisp focus of the Cathedral allows the viewer to see the lovely detail of the Cathedral.
For me to go out and take those pictures I needed inspiration. I found it in the day time work of Paul Adams and the night time work of Brassai.

A combination
This set of pictures presented below are my first steps to become a photographer. These pictures are the first time I used photshop to my benefit. All the photoshop techniques I used to edit these images are on the Experimental Page of my website, you can find it in the top right corner of the screen , under the button 'A-Level Projects'

The pictures above are black and white. They have a dark yet spiritual feel to them. My friend Kane is seen on one of the images. He is sitting down on the floor, he seems to be sad and lonely. Kane is looking at the floor, maybe in the hope of help. On his right you can see Mary, she is standing by his side. The spirit to this picture is in the thought that although he may be alone, he has a companion or a protector by his side who is watching over him, even in the saddest of times.
In order to create this image, I took a picture of Kane sitting down on the floor, I also took a picture of a Statue of Mary, that statue can be found in the Metropolitian Cathedral. I then cropped the picture of mary and blended it in with the picture of Kane by using the option Multiply.

Some of the pictures above are black and white. The are once again dark themed yet spiritual. They represent graveyards and the picture in colour is an image of the Church in Prescot, that is also where the Cementary is. The graveyards seem to be creepy when they are put into black and white , they are haunting.
Experimentation
The pictures presented below are a combination of the following photoshop techniques: Radial Blur, Blending Options, Masking Techniques, Black and White, Polar roids
The next set of pictures is the same as the images at the start of my own Photography, but this time I used a combination of photoshop techniques in order to give the images a very serious mood. I made the pictures black and white and I added a tint to them. I also used levels and curves in order to create images with dark and light shadows.
The next set of Pictures is going to be an experimentation. I have used a some of my photos and blended them together. I created a few, using a technique called Polar Co-ordinates. I have also included: Selective blur, Black and White conversions with a vignette effect. Some of the images gained a abstract look to them. While others have a messy yet artistic style. One of the images in particular is very abstract, it is the first image in the gallery. In order to create this type of effect, I used polar co-ordinates and I blended the polar coordinate with another image layer to give this effect of angel wings made out of the same image.

Below, there is a plan mind map. It represents the steps I want to take in order to improve my website in terms of coursework.
The next set of photograph's will be presenting my efforts during the half term. I decided to re-visit the Metropolitian Cathedral and also , for the first time I have visited The Walker's Art Gallery in Liverpool. I managed to get some interesting shots. On that day, I have also visited the Anglican Cathedral. The reason I chose to visit the Cathedral once again it's because it is a very spiritual place. I almost feel like, while capturing the shots, there is this wave of positivity and joy coming to me. This cathedral is a strong building, on a rainy day it can look miserable, but as soon as the sun comes out, it is filled with energy, joy and happiness.
The next of pictures has been taken inside of the Cathedral above.
I really enjoeyd shooting the Metropolitian Cathedral. Everytime I go back there, I seem to find very interesting angles. This is good because I manage to get different style images out of the same camera subject. What I enjoyed the most this time around, was photographing the colourful pannels outside. They add a lot of colour to the image, which is great, because although they are not the prime subject, they are still clearly visible and eye catching. All the images, apart from the pictures of the inside, were taken straight from my camera and put onto the webstite. To photoshop the inside, I used the Camera Raw filter. Then I made adjustments such as add vibrance and saturation , add contrast to the images and also darken them a little bit and add definition to the highliths and shadows.
The two full framed images were taken using 1/10 shutter speed, this gives the shutter some more time to take in extra detail. An advantage of that is that it takes in the image more than a standard 1/50 shutter speed would.
The next set of images will be my original camera shots from The Walker's Art Gallery. It is a gallery located in Liverpool and the main attraction it has to offer are the marble statues. They are a great ,artistic and a spiritual subject to photograph.
